In 2008, Emeco reissued the 1006 Navy Chair giving it a carved wood seat. To make the seats, they used a small wood manufacturer in Lancaster PA–near the Emeco factory. In 2009, British designer Michael Young designed the Lancaster collection, a component-based collection incorporating die-cast aluminum seats and backs with solid ash-wood legs. The sculptural form of the chair leg could only be made in durable wood and Emeco decided to take up the collaboration with a local wood manufacturer producing reclaimed ash wood harvested locally from timber in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

All the ash components are now crafted at a local amish factory in Lancaster, known for generations of excellent wood works. The ash wood was specially selected because of the strong and durable nature of the wood– the very same ash used for making wooden baseball bats. Along the legs of the Lancaster pieces you can really see the long grains cut to optimize strength. The Lancaster collection comes in two wood colors: light ash (with a little white added to neutralize the color) and dark stained finish. The stain and lacquer are water based and non-toxic.
